Testimonials

The GMIC has established an excellent track record since 1999. Here are some samples of the feedback we've received from both members of the golf industry and former students.

Current Industry Leaders:

"Clubs such as ours will be very interested in students graduating from the Golf Management Institute of Canada. The content of the program provides them with the tools to meet the many challenges that will face them on a daily basis, no matter in which area of the industry they might seek employment."

Joseph Murphy
Chief Operating Officer St. George's Golf & Country Club, Toronto, ON

"I am well aware of the importance of hiring highly-skilled and trained individuals who have chosen to make golf a career. I am particularly impressed with the Golf Management Institute of Canada. Their provision of practical, vocational experience is sure to bring professional golf management to a new level."

David Kaufman, LL.B., CPGA
Former Executive Director, Magna Golf Club, Toronto, ON

GMIC Graduates & Participants:

"The GMIC program is an excellent program for anyone in the golf industry trying to take it to the next level. I enjoyed the fact that I could keep working and have a balanced schedule of two courses every two months. The program also allowed me to complete my CPGA Class A requirements and most importantly obtain a post graduate diploma in golf management. I am currently working in the Bahamas as a teaching golf professional."

Mike Simms, C.P.G.A.
CPGA Golf Professional - Lyford Cay Club, Bahamas

"The GMIC is exceptional in terms of the depth of endless support provided by the staff, students and associated members. With that kind of backing, I felt there was no situation too tough to tackle. Those looking to forge a career in the golf industry would be well advised to consider the GMIC."

Mark Lathangue
GMIC Graduate 2002

" I followed a lead given by one of my instructors and took a position in the golf industry before the completion of the courses. Just eight months after graduating from the Golf Management Institute of Canada I accepted a senior position in the golf industry and now find myself in the General Managers seat at the Brant Valley GC."

Michael Ellis
General Manager - Brant Valley Golf Club, George, ON

"Without taking the initiative to further educate myself in the golf industry through GMIC, I can honestly say that I would not be in my current role with this organization. There is no question that allot of time and effort went into my GMIC studies, but I found it very rewarding and it has helped me to continue to further my career."

Shawn J. Hunter
Sales Manager - National Golf Course Owners Association Canada -
Eastern Ontario / Outaouais Chapter

As a CPGA Elite Apprentice with a Degree in Physical Education I was looking for a way to complete the Post Graduate Education component of my Class “A” requirements. It was through the GMIC where I discovered the type of classes that are best suited to my needs. The classes that I have taken so far have convinced me that once I have completed the program in full, I will be ready to take on a higher management position within any golf club and be comfortable with the information that I have learned through these courses in combination with my own personal experiences."

GMIC Success Story
Mark Lathangue – Oshawa, ON
Graduate – 2002

2000 – Enrolled in the Golf Management Institute of Canada program "Golf Course and Operations Management" post graduate degree program and did this while working full time in Toronto for a government firm, knowing that the contract I was on wasn't going to last forever.

2002 – graduated with honors from the Golf Management Institute of Canada and 1 month later was hired as general manager of Oshawa Airport Golf Club

2003 – Launched an aggressive marketing and promotion program for the golf course focusing on the food and beverage department and banquet facilities which sat idle under the previous leadership. With no advertising budget, I aligned myself with the proper suppliers and players I needed to develop relationships with to get the ball rolling.

2004 – Had one of the best overall revenue years in course history (surpassed only by 2000 due to an economic boom within the local auto industry). Food and beverage revenue combined with banquet revenue was the highest in course history.

2005 – Severe weather during the winter and spring months caused major strain on growing conditions and as a result, loss of play was substantial and so was green fee revenue. Although play was greatly reduced, our food and beverage numbers along with banquet revenue was only down 2% from 2004 compared to a 22% reduction in golf related revenues.

2006 – With a wonderful growing season, we were able to capitalize on an early start and sustained a constant rate of play throughout the year. With new menu creation, staffing upgrades and revenue focus we were able to regain a year as we had in 2004 but with a growth in member related revenues and involvement in events at the club along with a variety of non golf related events (e.g. fundraisers, anniversary/wedding receptions etc). Oshawa Airport Golf Club turned the corner to a new identity in the sports and recreation areas in Durham.

2007 – After spending 4 plus years at Oshawa Airport Golf Club, I parted ways with them in pursuit of a local opportunity to take on the role as General Manager at Newcastle Golf Club. After a short time period with them I am branching out on my own into a more direct service related business in the local area and could not have found this opportunity without the contacts and business relationships I have built within the golf industry.
